Further information on osteopathy

Here at the Williams Clinic, we specialise in Osteopathic medicine, with four Osteopathic practicioners all working in various disciplines.

There are many reasons for visiting an Osteopath. The cause of your ailment can arise from all manner of reasons ranging from poor posture to involvement in a road traffic accident. Whatever the cause your treatment will follow an individually tailored, tried and tested pathway.

Osteopathic medicine can involve: Soft tissue massage, rhythmic passive techniques and active joint mobilisation that is used along with individually prescribed exercise programmes and ergonomic advice, followed up by occasional maintenance treatment to improve health. Osteopaths help people with painful necks, backs, trapped nerves, bulging discs and degenerative joints (wear and tear). Osteopathic manipulation can also help painful and swollen limb joints and tendons, trauma, posture and occupation related problems.  Problems surrounding digestion have also been shown to be helped by osteopathy.

The steps of Treatment

Step 1: Finding out What is Causing Your Ailment. A thorough diagnosis and treatment plan will be explained to you so that you are fully aware of how your treatment should proceed. The Osteopath will explain what will happen during the treatment sessions.

Step 2: Treatment and Review Once the treatment has commenced the Osteopath will monitor your progress closely giving any relevant advice to you to help your condition improve. This may involve some strengthening or stretching exercises to help stabilize the effected areas or advice on posture or posture related situations.

Step 3: Post Treatment Advice and Review After your course of treatment the Osteopath will advise you on your continued progress so that hopefully the problem won't re-occur. One of the best ways to ensure that this won't happen again is to follow the route of preventative maintenance by arranging regular "MOT" visits to your Osteopath.
